Video on the "Covid-19 in cardiovascular disease" project
Covid-19 research in a high-security lab - insight into the work of an NRP 78 project.
The short video shows the work being done in the high security laboratory of the University of Bern and explains the objectives of the research project "Consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection in cardiovascular disease". Under strict safety precautions and dressed in special clothing, the researchers are investigating whether cell cultures of vascular and cardiac cells can be infected with SARS-CoV-2 and what the consequences would be. They aim to uncover the mechanisms that lead to cardiovascular and neurological complications in severe cases of Covid-19. In particular, they are investigating how vascular and cardiac cells, including the blood-brain barrier, are attacked, leading to microvascular thrombosis, cardiac damage and loss of the sense of taste and smell. This will enable the development of therapeutic approaches aimed at preventing severe disease in patients and at aiding a speedier recovery.
